A tribute to the late Master Bernard Khoo

Our Master Bernard Khoo has passed on. He brings to mind a flood of memories of when he was our Master at La Salle Sentul in the 1960s.

This is the man who also gave us the defining experience through his popular blog site ‘Zorro Unmasked’.
Our Master, when he first reported at La Salle Sentul, he came with a thundering punch in the air within the first week. And that has been the late Master Bernard Khoo’s trademark even till that last day of his life.
He never hesitated to say what was right even if it hurt the wayward forces.

Back then in the 1960s, too, we boys feared him. We boys respected him - though often we learnt it the harder way. We soon knew not to mess with this man who did not wink an eye to take on the Sentul thugs any time, anywhere, anyhow.
“You name the place I will see you there!” was a challenge from him that the young thugs did not want to miss, but only to return to class the next day like a purring little pussy.

That was Master Bernard Khoo. He took on the challenge to rid the school of gangsters. But in doing so, he had a nobler plan. He was equally determined to turn these ‘mighty-naughty’ boys into great citizens and students and sons and brothers and friends.

He achieved more. He really made these tough boys into great sportsmen. He made many of us good in our studies. And often he would do all these both inside and out of school time. We know how he never hesitated to dig his hands into his pockets to even help these boys financially.

Here was a man who was a great teacher. A good model for young impressionable minds; truly he was a man who could walk the talk and talk the walk without seeking self-glorification.

And even when out of the teaching profession he lived true to his calling – to help transform society; to fight for truth and justice; to stand up for his convictions and values that often rubbed many the wrong way up.
But for those who truly were seeking truth and transformation, Bernard Khoo was relevant. Hence, that legacy he has left us with in Zorro-Unmasked remains permanently etched on this part of the planet.

May God grant this man, Master Bernard Khoo, eternal rest for he truly taught us La Sallelians what was honour, dignity, truth and principles.

Bernard ( & Haris) were the early warriors that dared to take on the Old Order regime. He pushed the boundaries through his Blog Zorro Unmasked & challenged us to question the status quo as immutable! Although afflicted with a serious medical condition Zorro never gave up on the pursuit for a Better Malaysia. He was betrayed by one particular mercenary & charlatan whom he supported loyally but that did not deter him from staying the course. Bernard was the quintessential Anak Bangsa Malaysia. He deserves recognition albeit belated. May his legacy inspire generations to come.
